As human beings we tend to lead much longer lives than most of our counterparts in the animal kingdom, however as we age we tend to accumulate wrinkles, dreaded little creases that make your skin look well, shriveled. Given that our society is obsessed with youth and beauty, it’s only natural that you’d want to prevent wrinkles from forming wherever and whenever they might crop up. But before we investigate tips for preventing them, let’s learn what actually causes them, eh?
What causes wrinkles to form?!
Simply stated, wrinkles form as a result of loss of moisture to certain areas of the skin, namely the epidermis. The actual problem takes place in the dermis, which houses elastin and collagen, both of which are used to bring this much-needed moisture to the surface of the skin. Wrinkles pop out of nowhere when the fat in this layer begins to disappear, thus initiating the dreaded “sag”, which creates creases and so forth.
Sleep is critical for a healthy, functioning body and system, of that there can be no question. Well, the same logic applies to your skin as well, and developing a more regular sleeping schedule (as well as just sleeping more in general) seems to really help fight the aging process. Moreover, a lot of researchers who are investigating this area claim that sleeping on your back is actually the most preferable position too (as it prevents the skin from bunching up and forming lines, etc.)
Cut your vices
Look, we all like to have an alcoholic drink or two here and there, but there’s no question that it can age you. By the same token, smoking has been shown to accelerate the aging process and facilitate wrinkle formation so consider cutting out such habits entirely if you’re trying to maintain your skins youthful glow.
Even thought his one should be a no-brainer, you’d be surprised at the number of people out there who either neglect or avoid wearing sunscreen altogether. Even those who plan on being in the sun for extended periods of time for days or weeks on end will just simply forgo taking any sort of preventative measures in this regard. Not only is this dangerous, due to concerns over skin cancer, but it is also a sure fire way to tan and dry out your skin so that it starts to resemble old leather.
Be mindful of your facial movements
Arguably this one will be extremely difficult for most people to remain mindful of, simply because lots of people tend to communicate with their facial muscles much more than they realize. Doing things like squinting on a regular basis has been shown to accelerate the formation of wrinkles around the corners of eyes too (aka – crow’s feet). Whenever you use your facial muscles you are causing grooves to form and you know at that point it’s only a matter of time until the wrinkles come knocking. To help remedy this, always tote a pair of sunglasses with you during the day.
