It seems there’s nothing you can do without having to keep your back in mind. Running, walking, sitting down, lifting weights: there’s always a risk of injuring your back. Even just spending time playing with your children can cause problems!
Fewer people are doing physical labour these days, with increases in sedentary office jobs. People thought this would reduce the number of back problems. But sitting down all day has proven to be almost as risky as carrying large weights.
One of the biggest topics in back problems is posture. If you spend too long in certain positions, you can alter the curvature of your back in undesirable ways.
Unhealthy posture occurs when some back muscles tighten up and shorten while others weaken. People often think of poor posture as a permanent slump, but this isn’t always the case. Everybody’s body is different. One person’s good posture can be someone else’s poor posture.
Many think this posture just looks unprofessional, or lazy. But it can be much more severe than that. Incorrect posture can keep causing back problems. As you get older, it will become increasingly difficult to stand up straight. Back pain may become chronic.
It can be difficult to tell if you have poor posture. There are a lot of habits that people pick up over the years that are all known to have an adverse effect on your posture. This article feels a little gloomy so far, but here’s some good news. There are steps you can take to improve your posture!
The most famous method is to sit up straighter. Some of your back should be resting against the back of your chair. Don’t lean forward so much! When you’re sat at a computer for extended periods of time, it can be easy to forget how you’re sitting. Try writing a note – “Sit up straight! – and placing it somewhere on your desk where you’ll see it often.
You may have heard of braces that keep your neck and back in healthy positions. These posture correctors are available online and in stores. But do posture correctors work? There are a lot of positive reviews out there, but you should research each product. You may find exactly what you’re looking for!
Exercise is, of course, highly advised. It provides a break from your regular seating position. It can also strengthen the right muscles in your back. You need to be careful, though! There are many exercises that can do more damage than good.
Leaving your work desk to go on an epic workout isn’t always realistic. But there’s still plenty you can do. Have a good stretch at regular intervals. If you can, try walking around the office for a few minutes. (You can always tell your boss that short walks inspire you!)
