There comes a point in our lives when it is time to make some changes. It seems like we can’t carry on life as we had done when we were in our teens or twenties. It takes longer to recover from an injury, let alone a big night drinking. We might feel like we are getting tired more easily, as well as just needing more downtime. It isn’t a bad thing; it is just our bodies way of telling us that it is time to change things. A few changes can lead to a much healthier, and as a result happier, life. If you allow yourself time to rest and have down time, then you are much more likely to live to a ripe old age. So it is time to start taking better care of yourself, whatever your age is. Here are a few suggestions of what you could start to change about your life.

Relaxation or Meditation

We are all busy in life. We all have work, study, home life, social life and family commitments. So it can be such a juggling act. Not all of us will need time to relax every day. But we all need to take the time to relax, every so often. You might only be able to fit it in once a week, but it needs to happen. If you make it a priority, then it will happen. After all, it is your health and wellbeing, so it should be a top priority. Being able to relax gives your body a physical rest. It means time out from the regular stresses and strains of life. It is important for your mental health too. You could start something like meditation to unwind and be alone with your thoughts. You can reevaluate all that you have to do, as well as how you are feeling about yourself. Being able to relax can be hard; we’re not very good at it by nature. But we need to learn to take time out every so often!

Cut Down Your Alcohol Intake

We often hear in the media that wine is good for us. The truth behind it is that red wine is good for us, in theory. There is a compound in the wine, called resveratrol that has been shown to help reduce cholesterol and chance of heart disease. It works by changing the microbiome in your gut. The thing is, though, you’d need to drink a lot of wine to see any benefit from it. Wine has lots of other things in it that aren’t good for you. So it is probably best to stick to the recommended amount of alcohol. If you find that you regularly have more than you should, then it is time to cut down. Wine can dehydrate you, as well as cause damage to internal organs like your liver. You don’t want to age before your time!

Smokers will often hear this, as it’s not new news. The science still backs it up, though. Smoking is not good for you in any way. It can cost a lot of money, not to mention the disastrous effects that it can have on your body. It can yellow your skin and teeth, as well as affect the look of your skin. Then there are the sicknesses and diseases that can come as a result of smoking. So there is no time like the present to quit. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to help you to quit.

First of all, you could just quit cold turkey. This will require a lot of willpower. But with the right people around you and being in the right frame of mind, it can happen. One way that a lot of people are choosing to quit smoking is by vaping. Vaping has the same nicotine effect that smoking has. It is minus the tar and other toxins, though. So it could be a good option for you. The vape juice or e-liquid can have different nicotine levels. So you can gradually reduce the amount that you use. Being able to reduce the amount of nicotine means you can cut down slowly. Having a vape to hold also helps a lot of smokers as they are used to having something to hold regularly. That is why more people are turning to vaping, compared to nicotine patches. Patches are still an option for you. They work in the same way as vaping, in that you reduce the strength of the patches over time.

When you decide to quit smoking it is a good idea to take up a hobby. If you are in your usual situation on an evening, it can be easy to light up as you watch TV. So it is a good idea to have something new to keep you occupied. You could join the gym or take up running. You could get into baking or something like sewing. Just choose something that can keep you occupied in your down time.

Choose Organic Products Where Possible

One way to make sure you live and long and healthy life is to choose organic produce. This could be in the form of foods, as well as things like beauty products. It can be a little bit more expensive, so you need to weigh up the value of it to you. Things that are organic are free from extra chemicals or nasties. They are made using natural products, without things like pesticides or hormones. Anything that you eat goes into your body. A lot of people forget that what you put on your skin and hair also goes into your body. So you are putting those chemicals inside your body. The effects are hard to monitor. But if you regularly feel exhausted or worn out, it could be because of these extra chemicals cruising around in your body.

Reduce Your Sugar Intake

Sugar is in so many things these days. Even things that you wouldn’t expect to see it in. Look at what is in things that pasta sauces and cereals. You will find lots of sugar. When sugar is refined, as it is in these things, it causes quick spikes in your blood sugar. This can give you a quick burst of energy. That all sounds very well doesn’t it? But then the blood sugar shoots back down, just as quickly as it went up. This makes you tired and worn out. It can make you crave more sugar, as well as just wanting more food in general. So you want to look for foods that can keep your blood sugar at a steady level. If you eat more natural sugars, from fruit and vegetables, then it will be much more steady. So where possible, make your own food from scratch. If you make your own pasta sauces, for example, it won’t contain any sugar. It will be made using natural ingredients, without any of the white stuff in sight.

Sugar is an addictive substance too. So you want to be able to live a long and happy life, without the crutch of sugar. Being free from addictions means that you are in control. There isn’t much more that can make you happier than that!

Walk More

In order to make real changes to your health, you need to make changes to your lifestyle. When things become a way of life, you know you have made real changes. One of those things is walking more. It can be hard to do in our busy lives. It is easier to just jump in the car and go to the store, rather than walk. It takes a little longer but we need to learn to implement walking more into our daily lives. We are advised to aim for at least 10,000 steps per day. This can be harder to do than you think! One good way to see where you are at is to get a step counter. This will help you to monitor how far you are going. Then if you need to go for a quick walk before going to bed, you can. Having a step counter just makes you much more aware of how much you are moving. So it is a great idea to get one.

Lift Weights

This point can put a lot of people off. But lifting weights is great for your health. First of all, the more muscular you are, the more calories you burn in everyday life. Second of all, doing resistance training helps to build your muscles and make them stronger. Being stronger can help so much as we get older. It can help with our posture, as well as being able to perform daily tasks easily. So I am not talking about becoming a bodybuilder. I am just talking about using some resistance to get stronger. Doing cardio alone isn’t good enough to help your muscles. A combination of both cardio and resistance training is best.
